Redware Jar
Rochester, NY, 1820-40

A very nice large, bold, gutsy redware jar with a two color drip-slip decoration attributed to western New York. Specifically, this type of decoration has been ascribed to the potteries in West Bloomfield, Ontario County, New York based on shards found at the site by George Hamell in the 1970's. The Nathaniel Rochester Pottery is usually the one cited but evidence suggests other potteries in Ontario County produced similar two color decorated pieces. This example, which is very similar to a jar sold by Garth's in 2016, is larger and a bit more exuberant in form. It was made to have a lid, now missing. The cream and dark brown slip was applied as the jar was horizontal and allowed to drip around the body. Most effective as a decorative technique. Drilled for wire, very light wear around the belly.
