Rare Free Blown Cobalt Blue Vase
American, probably Sandwich, 1820-1840
The McKearins relate on pages 91-92 of American Glass that freeblown and paneled vases of this form are most likely of Sandwich origin but allowing that some were very likely made at other factories. They have been called "Stiegal type" in earlier years but they discounted that theory. Plain vases with this rolled rim had "been recorded in blue, green and amethyst" and are scarcer than the paneled forms. One example in blue was sold at the 1939 sale of the Alfred Maclay collection for $235.00, one of the highest prices of the sale. Excellent condition with a few quartz inclusions.
